Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, will retire in April after 15 years with the company.
Fils-Aime took the world by storm during Nintendo’s 2004 E3 press conference with his bold personality. This personality is best exemplified by the numerous memes he spawned, ranging from his famous “my body is ready” quote during the Wii Balance Board reveal to the Fils-A-Mech video he starred in to announce plans for E3 2014.
However, Fils-Aime’s actions within the company were equally as important to Nintendo as his public image. Following the GameCube’s middling performance, he changed how Nintendo of America was perceived during the Wii’s life cycle by appealing to new demographics while not abandoning hardcore Nintendo fans.
Fils-Aime will pass his position to senior vice president of sales and marketing Doug Bowser. While some are surprised that Fils-Aime is retiring early into the Switch’s massively successful life cycle, he will thankfully leave on good terms and without controversy, stating plans to spend more time with family and friends.
